stepping into the next season

At any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.

In Northeast NJ the leaves are turning brilliant colors of red, yellow, and orange. Rather than cling on to their branches and hope that nothing changes they feel the shift inside and choose to let go. They do not worry about the journey ahead. They simply trust their intuition, follow what feels right and release.

There is a lot that can be learned from watching this process. Trees filled with green leaves, shifting and changing colors, then ultimately showing off their bare branches. Standing tall and proud in who they are.

As darkness begins to set earlier and the leaves scatter to the ground I think about the changing of the seasons. With this new season comes a shift that I can feel from deep inside. One that ask’s me to slow down, observe and reflect.

I am shedding the summer glow. The long days spent outdoors soaking in the sunshine has ignited a fire in me that will help fuel me throughout the winter. But I can feel the shift and I am learning to let go of what I no longer need to carry.

Letting go of expectations. Letting go of where I thought I would be. Letting go of judgment and criticism. Letting go of the old stories that have been playing on repeat. Letting go of being so hard on myself.

And rather than stand in the darkness unsure of where to go I am shining my own light and inviting in what I know I need. I am inviting in compassion and kindness towards not only others, but myself as well. Inviting in laughter and love. Inviting in taking risks, putting myself out there, and going for what I truly desire. Of saying yes, even if I am afraid to do so. I am inviting in connection and community. Inviting in opportunity that lights me up.

There is a seasonality to life. It doesn’t always follow along with winter, spring, summer, and fall, but it is within us. A shifting of tides asking us to step into something new whether we are ready for it or not.

Here in NJ we can’t keep summer around forever, even if we want to. The daylight hours grow shorter and we adjust to chiller nights and morning frost. When life begins to shift you have to learn to roll with it. You may not be ready. Your winter coats may still be packed up in the attic but you have to run out in the morning anyway.

There can be resistance that comes with this change. You hold onto the shorts and flip flops a little bit longer than you should. Breaking them out when the weather is only sixty three degrees. It feels warm, but is it really warm enough for shorts?

Other times we are ready. Done with the heat and humidity when the first chill hits the air you break out your boots and wear them with excitement. You cannot wait to layer up and feel the breeze on your cheeks.

Even when you know the change is coming you are never exactly sure when it will happen. You must be ready to adjust to the new path that is before you. You must be willing to let go and see where the wind takes you.

Are you ready for the next season of your life? Are you open to shifting and flowing through whatever comes your way?

Still seeking out employment I am shifting into another iteration of myself. Learning what moves me. Unearthing the lessons I have learned along the way and seeing how they all make up why I am where I am today. I am sifting through the details and cultivating this next season of life. It is beautifully terrifying. It has pushed me in ways I never thought I would be pushed.

I am learning to stand taller on my own two feet. I am learning to continue to own my voice. I am learning more about who I am and what ignites my spark. All of these are important tools for each season of life. And so I am taking notes along the way and moving forward one step at a time; stepping into the next season.

As you step into your next season what are you ready to let go of? What are you ready to invite in? Take a moment to really explore these two opposites and honor both of them.

What you are letting go of has served you well on your journey, but that doesn’t mean you need to carry it around forever. Thank it for what it has given you and send it off with well wishes.

I want to let go of …

Now think about what you want to invite in. What are you desiring? What do you need? What will help light you up? Have fun with this!

I want to invite more of this into my life …
